    Three people were hospitalized Saturday after a driver struck two pedestrians with his car and was then beaten by witnesses.

    Three people were hospitalized after a driver struck two pedestrians with his car and was then beaten by witnesses on Chicago's South Side.

    The man was driving just after 7 p.m. Friday in the 9300 block of South Cottage Grove Avenue in the Burnside neighborhood when he hit two pedestrians that were crossing the street, according to Chicago Police News Affairs Officer Jose Estrada.

    Two pedestrians were transported from the scene to area hospitals in serious-to-critical condition, according to Fire Media Affairs.

    A 49-year-old woman was taken to Stroger Hospital in stable condition and a man, whose age was not released, was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn in critical condition, police said.

    Police on Saturday were searching for the driver of an SUV who sped off after crashing into two people and a south side restaurant. The victims were standing outside the store, in the 1900 block of East 95th Street, at about 1:30 a.m. when an SUV drove into them and knocked them into the front window of the restaurant.     After the accident, citizens and witnesses near the scene dragged the driver out of his car and assaulted him, according to Chicago Fire Department spokesman Chief Juan Hernandez.

    The 59-year-old driver was injured in the assault and transported to Stroger Hospital in stable condition.

    No arrests were made and no citations were issued as of Saturday morning, police said.
