American Missionary Killed, Child Kidnapped in Haiti

An American missionary was killed and a young child was kidnapped from her car in Haiti on Saturday night, according to police and the victim's church, NBC News reported.

The Tennessee-based Estes Church of Christ said witnesses had reported that Roberta Edwards, 55, was driving in Haiti's capital of Port-au-Prince, where she had worked for years, when another vehicle blocked her path.

Unidentified gunmen got out of the vehicle and fired into Edwards' car, the church said. Haiti's National Police told NBC News that a child around the age of four had been taken from the vehicle.

The church said Edwards was caring for 20 children in her home and also running a nutrition center that fed 160 children twice a day.

State Department spokesperson Katy Bondy confirmed Edwards' death and said the State Department was providing assistance to her family.
