High School Athlete Suspended for Picking Up Intoxicated Friend

A Massachusetts high school student was reportedly stripped of her title as captain of her volleyball team and suspended for five games after she offered an intoxicated friend a ride home from a party.

The family of 17-year-old Erin Cox filed a lawsuit on Friday to get school officials to reverse the punishment, but the district court judge ruled that they did not have jurisdiction over the issue, according to local TV station WBZ-TV.

"If a kid asks for help from a friend, you don't want that kid to say 'I'm sorry I can't help you. I might end up in trouble at school,'" said the Cox family's attorney, Wendy Murphy,

An intoxicated friend texted Cox earlier this month for a ride home from a party. Cox arrived while police was arresting students for underage drinking and ended up being grouped with the teenagers who were summoned to court even though a police officer said she was sober, according to the Boston Herald.

An attorney for the school said officials at North Andover High School are sticking with their decision, taking a principled stand regarding alcohol," the Herald reported.

Meanwhile, Cox said she does not regret doing "the right thing" to help her friend.
