Five Dead, At Least 29 Wounded Since Friday Evening

Among those shot were a 15-year-old boy and an off-duty Oak Park police officer

The violence started early this warm spring weekend, with five people dead and at least 29 wounded from shootings citywide by Sunday morning.

The first fatal shooting of the weekend happened at about 5 p.m. Friday when two men were killed and a woman was injured.

Police responded to a report of a person shot in the 4200 block of West Grenshaw in the North Lawndale neighborhood shortly  before 5 p.m. When they arrived they found a 31-year-old man and a 28-year-old man, both shot in the head. A 54-year-old woman had also been shot in the leg.

The 31-year-old man was found unresponsive on the ground and pronounced dead on the scene, police said. The other man, who was found in the drivers seat of a pick-up truck, was taken to Mount Sinai, where he was pronounced dead.

The woman was taken to Saint Anthony Hospital, where her condition stabilized.

A police source said the incident may be drug-related.

A 24-year-old man was shot to death shortly after the first incident in the Greater Grand Crossing neighborhood. He was standing on the sidewalk in the 1300 block of East 75th Street at about 5:20 p.m. Friday when another man in a gray four-door Pontiac fired shots at him.

The victim was struck in the neck and chest. He was taken to Jackson Park Hospital and Medical Center in critical condition, but was later pronounced dead.

A police source said the victim was a documented gang member, but it is not clear if the shooting was gang-related.

In another fatal shooting Friday, a 26-year-old man was killed. The man was shot to death at about 10:10 p.m. in the 7900 block of South Aberdeen in the Auburn Gresham neighborhood.

Police were called to the block for a report of shots fired. When they arrived they found the man lying on the sidewalk with gunshot wounds to the chest. The man has not yet been identified, but Fr. Michael Pfleger, pastor of St. Sabina Church, said the victim's older brother works for him. The shooting happened just a few blocks from the church.

A 26-year-old man was shot to death early Sunday in the Marquette Park neighborhood, police said.

The man was standing on the sidewalk in the 3100 block of West 64th Street at about 12:40 a.m. when two men walked up and fired shots. The victim was struck in the chest and pronounced dead on the scene.

At least 27 other people were wounded in shootings since Friday evening:

  • A 30-year-old man was shot in the foot during a drive-by shooting at about 5:30 p.m. Friday in the 4400 block of West Armitage in the Hermosa neighborhood, police said. The man was taken to Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center in good condition.
  • Two men, whose ages were not immediately known, were shot at about 9:30 p.m. near 130th Street and Greenwood Avenue in the Altgeld Gardens neighborhood, police said. They were taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn with injuries that were not thought to be life-threatening.
  • Two men, aged 28 and 56, were shot at about 1:35 a.m. Saturday in the 5300 block of South Justine in the Back of the Yards neighborhood, police said. The younger man was shot in the abdomen, and the other man was struck in the leg and back. Both were taken to John H. Stroger, Jr. Hospital, where their conditions stabilized.
  • A 21-year-old man was shot in the chest and hand at about 1:35 a.m. Saturday in the 6400 block of South Justine in the Englewood neighborhood, police said. The man was walking in the block when another man walked up to him and fired shots. The victim was taken to Saint Bernard Hospital, where his condition stabilized.
  • A 15-year-old boy was shot in the lower back at about 1:45 a.m. Saturday in the 4300 block of North Sacramento in the Irving Park neighborhood, police said. The teenager took himself to Swedish Covenant Hospital.
  • A 21-year-old man was shot in the back during a drive-by shooting at about 2:20 a.m. Saturday in the 5700 block of South Bishop in the Englewood neighborhood, police said. The man was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital in critical condition.
  • A 40-year-old man was shot in both legs at about 4 a.m. Saturday in the 5100 block of South Marshfield in the Back of the Yards neighborhood, police said. He was taken to John H. Stroger, Jr. Hospital, where his condition stabilized.
  • Two men, both 19, were shot at about 4:15 a.m. Saturday in the 5300 block of South Winchester in the Back of the Yards neighborhood, police said. Further details were not available.
  • An 18-year-old man was shot in the thigh at about 4:15 a.m. Saturday in the 2200 block of West Touhy in the West Rogers Park neighborhood, police said. The man was standing in the block when three other men approached him, and at least one of them fired shots. The victim was taken to Saint Francis Hospital in Evanston, where his condition stabilized.
  • A 23-year-old man was shot in the back at about 5:30 a.m. Saturday in the 300 block of South Cicero Avenue in the Austin neighborhood, police said. He was standing in the block when another man approached him in a blue minivan and began firing shots. Both the victim and the offender then fled the scene. The man was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital in critical condition.
  • A 23-year-old man was shot in the stomach at about 5:40 a.m. Saturday in the 4900 block of West Jackson in the Austin neighborhood, police said. The man was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital, where his condition stabilized.
  • A 23-year-old man was shot in the leg at about 10 a.m. Saturday in the 6700 block of South Union in the Englewood neighborhood, police said. The man was taken to Saint Bernard Hospital and Health Care Center by a family member. He is listed in good condition.
  • A 19-year-old man was shot in the thigh at about 5:20 p.m. Saturday in the 4400 block of North Hazel in the Uptown neighborhood, police said. The man was standing in the block when he heard shots and realized he had been struck. He walked to Weiss Memorial Hospital and was later transferred to Northwestern Memorial Hospital in fair condition.
  • A 27-year-old man was shot in the upper back and arm late Saturday night in the 6400 block of South Wood in the West Englewood neighborhood, police said. He was standing in the block when someone inside a dark-colored van opened fire. He was taken to John H. Stroger, Jr. Hospital, where his condition stabilized.
  • A 20-year-old man was accidentally shot by a friend late Saturday night in the 6200 block of South Wood in the West Englewood neighborhood, police said. The friend was playing with a gun inside a home when it accidentally fired. The victim was taken to John H. Stroger, Jr. Hospital, where his condition stabilized.
  • A 58-year-old Oak Park Police officer was shot in the arm and leg on his way to work early Sunday morning. The man, identified as Johnny Patterson, was approached by two men during an alleged attempted robbery when one of them fired shots. Patterson was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn in serious condition.
  • A 23-year-old woman and a 28-year-old man were shot at about 6:30 a.m. Sunday in the 5900 block of South Kedzie in the Gage Park neighborhood, police said. They took themselves to Holy Cross Hospital. Further information was not available.
  • A 24-year-old woman and a 23-year-old man were shot at about 10:30 a.m. Sunday in the 6700 block of South Bishop in the West Englewood neighborhood, police said. They took themselves to Holy Cross Hospital. Further information was not available.
  • A boy, whose age was unknown, was shot in the hand at about 2:40 p.m. Sunday in the 1900 block of West Birchwood in the Rogers Park neighborhood, police said. He was taken to Saint Francis Hospital in Evanston, where his condition stabilized.
  • Around 4:45 p.m., two people were in the 8900 block of South Blackstone Avenue. Police said two men were standing on the street when a passenger in a black SUV fired shots at them. A 20-year-old man was shot in the shoulder and was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital and a 24-year-old man suffered a graze wound to the shoulder and refused treatment.
  • Just before 6 p.m., a woman in her 20s was shot in the hand in the 400 block of South Kostner Avenue. The woman took herself to Mount Sinai hospital. Circumstances surrounding the shooting were not immediately available.
  • Around the same time, a 16-year-old boy was shot in the leg in the 5500 block of West Quincy Street. The teen was taken to Stroger Hospital where he was listed in stable condition.
