Councilman Marion Barry Involved in Car Accident

Longtime D.C. Council member and former Mayor Marion Barry was involved in a minor car accident Saturday night and sources told News4 that he was driving on the wrong side of the street.

The crash happened at about 9 p.m. along Pennsylvania Avenue near Minnesota Avenue. The source said Barry was also driving with expired plates on his car.

He was charged with driving on the wrong side and for the expired tags. An occupant in the other car complained of neck pain and was taken to a hospital, the Associated Press reported.

A spokeswoman for Barry said he suffered a hypoglycemic attack while driving, became disoriented and had a "minor fender bender." Barry was transported to a hospital for observation, but was released and resumed public appearances Sunday, the AP reported.

"My blood sugar went low, and when it does that you become disoriented. In fact, you can die really if it got but so low. But God is good to me," Barry explained.

After the incident, Barry -- a frequent Tweeter -- sent tweets saying he was OK.

The crash happened at about 9 p.m. along Pennsylvania Avenue near Minnesota Avenue Saturday night.

Barry has suffered from diabetes for the last two decades and had a kidney transplant in 2009. Earlier this year, Barry was hospitalized repeatedly for a series of disorders, including a blood infection.
