Ground Stop Lifted at O'Hare, Other Airports as American Airlines Computers Restored

American Airlines said computers were restored and a ground stop has been lifted at several airports Thursday after earlier "technical issues."

As of 12:48 p.m. (1:48 p.m. ET) Leslie Scott, a spokesperson for American Airlines, said computers were working. The Federal Aviation Administration reported a ground stop was lifted at 1:15 p.m (2:15 p.m. ET).

The ground stop for American Airlines and all of its subsidiaries included traffic arriving to O'Hare, Dallas Fort-Worth and Miami, the FAA reported. 

In total, 291 flights were impacted across all airports, officials said. The airline said 28 flights at O'Hare Airport were delayed by the computer glitch and six flights were canceled.

"Fotunately it happened not during a peak time," Scott said, adding that it was not immediately clear what caused the issues.

The airline confirmed that it was experiencing technical issues at several airports including O’Hare International Airport shortly after noon Thursday. 

A spokesperson for American Airlines said that customers could not check in at airport computers and said the airline was working to fix the error. 

"We’re working to resolve technical issues impacting several airports as quickly as possible," the airline said in a statement. "We will provide updates and more information as they become available. We apologize to our customers for the inconvenience."

Customers were seen standing in long lines at O'Hare and several passengers posted their frustrations to social media.
