Wash. Shooting: Families of Victims Grieve by Bedsides

Three of the students wounded during a school shooting in Marysville, Washington, Friday were in critical condition Saturday, with a fourth in serious condition, hospital officials said. Two female victims — identified as Shaylee Chuckulnaskit and Gia Soriano, both 14 — suffered head wounds when Jaylen Ray Fryberg opened fire in the Marysville Pilchuck High School cafeteria, police and hospital officials said. Fryberg killed a female student, and died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, according to authorities. The girls’ families are by the patients’ bedsides, and “just grieving," officials at Providence Regional Medical Center in Everett said. Two male victims, ages 14 and 15, are being treated at Harborview Medical Center Seattle and are in serious and critical condition respectively. Read »

Wash. School Gunman "Seemed Like a Nice Guy"

A Washington state high school student who opened fire on a cafeteria table full of students, killing one, before fatally shooting himself on Friday, was smiling and waving to the crowd at Marysville Pilchuck High School's homecoming ceremony last week. Erick Cervantes, 16, a junior, told NBC News that Jaylen Ray Fryberg "seemed like a nice guy, and he had lots of friends," and others said he was popular with his classmates. Police haven't released any motive in the attack, that also left four students wounded, but classmates said Fryberg had recently gotten into an argument with another student and law enforcement sources said he may have been in a recent dispute over a girl. The town of West Jordan, Utah, is celebrating celebrating both Halloween and Christmas early for a 4-year-old boy with only a short time to live, Today.com reported. Ethan Van Leuven has been battling acute lymphoblastic leukemia for more than half his life, and doctors declared that his illness is terminal. Family and friends dressed up in Halloween costumes 10 days early and went trick-or-treating, and just two days later, held a parade in honor of Ethan’s fifth birthday, a month before his actual day.
