Confusion Turned Deadly as S. Korea Ferry Sank

A newly released transcript from the ferry that sank off South Korea shows the confusion in the half hour between the first distress call and the evacuation, NBC News reported. The transcript shows that a crew member repeatedly asked Vessel Traffic Services Center (VTS) whether passengers would be rescued if they abandoned the ferry. But that followed several statements from the ship that it was impossible for people aboard to even move and another in which it said it was "impossible to broadcast" instructions. The confirmed death toll from the ferry rose to 58 on Sunday and about 240 people are still missing. Read »

Senators: U.S. Should Not Wait to Help Ukraine

U.S. senators said Sunday that the U.S. should not wait for Russia to make more threats before sending more security aid. Senator Chris Murphy (D-Conn.) said on NBC's "Meet the Press" that the Obama administration's reluctance to place sanctions on Russia indicates to Putin that he can do what he'd like in Ukraine as long as it doesn't "embarrass" the West. Ukrainian Prime Minister Arseniy Yatsenyuk said on the program that his country needs financial support in order to "modernize Ukrainian military" to defend itself against Putin's plans of reunifying the Soviet Union. Another Meteor Caught on Russian Dashcams

A suspected meteorite explosion has been recorded on dashcams in the northwestern Russian city of Murmansk on Saturday, NBC News reported. The fireball explosion looked much like the meteor that lit up the sky over Chelyabinsk in Siberia last year, but the impact of Saturday's blast wasn't nearly as dramatic. The Chelyabinsk meteor blew out windows and injured 1,200 people. No sound of an explosion was heard from Saturday's meteor, although it was sighted from Murmansk as well as other cities on Russia's Kola Peninsula, reported. Read »
