Texas Roof Falls, 10 Sent to Hospitals

The roof of a privately run East Texas jail has collapsed, temporarily trapping dozens of inmates and injuring 20 — 10 of whom went to nearby hospitals.

The incident happened Saturday morning at the Diboll Correctional Center in Diboll, about 10 miles south of Lufkin and 105 miles northeast of Houston.

Warden David Driskell said 84 inmates were in the area when the roof fell, trapping many of them briefly. He said that aside from the 10 inmates sent to hospitals, an untold number were being treated at the scene for minor injuries.

Driskell said none of the injuries appeared to be life-threatening.

Jail officials were trying to determine what caused the collapse, and state prison officials have been dispatched.

The 518-bed minimum-security prison is operated by Centerville, Utah-based Management & Training Corp.
