Winter Weather Leaves 7 Dead, Snarls Holiday Travel

Freezing rain, snow, ice and thunderstorms were creating chaos for millions of holiday travelers from the Louisiana Gulf Coast to eastern Canada early on Sunday, as a huge and deadly storm system moved east in time for Christmas, NBC News reported. The severe weather was complicating travel for the 95 million people that travel agency AAA estimates will fly or drive for the holiday. More than 4,000 flights had been delayed and 591 cancelled across the country on Sunday, according to aviation tracking website FlightAware.com. The weather was also to blame for at least seven deaths, including a driver killed Saturday afternoon on an icy road near Kansas City, Mo., police said, and two people in Mississippi who were killed as a result of gusty winds. Meanwhile, a “significant” ice storm was set to hit New York State, Vermont, New Hampshire, and central Maine. But balmy, unseasonable weather was moving ahead of the front, with much of the East Coast seeing highs in the 70s.
