Forget Bags — Employees Ride Free

You won't believe how many people ride Metro for free

Do you know who’ll never have to worry about Metro fare hikes? Metro workers and retirees. Metro lets its thousands of employees and retirees ride trains and buses for free, and the benefit lasts for life, according to the Washington Examiner.

How much does this cost Metro? The transit agency doesn’t keep track of the numbers, but the Washington Examiner crunched some and came up with a figure of about $6.5 million each year.

That’s a pretty penny, especially when you consider the fact that Metro is facing a $189 million budget deficit.

One of its options for closing that gap is a fare hike.  Think any Metro employees will object to that?
