Don't Drink the Water

Arlington stream tainted by sewage discharge

Arlington County authorities are advising residents to avoid drinking water from a stream tainted by a sewage discharge.

Residents should avoid drinking from and should keep their pets away from water downstream of an Upper Long Branch stream, where sewage was discovered discharging from a manhole.

The affected area begins near the Long Cranch Nature Center and continues through Four Mile Run at Glencarlyn Park. The affected stream flows down to the Potomac River.

Residents should not fish in the stream or have any other contact with the affected water. This advisory is considered an extra precaution until discharge is stopped and the tainted water is flushed naturally from the streams.

Parks and recreational areas adjacent to the affected stream include Glencarlyn, Barcroft, Allie Freed, Shirlington, Jennie Dean and Four Mile Run.
