Arlington Central Library Displays Nixon, Watergate Memorabilia

Central Library in Arlington will be displaying newspapers, campaign items and pop culture collectables related to President Richard M. Nixon.

The Rosslyn garage made famous by "Deep Throat" is slated for demolition, but that doesn't mean the Watergate scandal will be forgotten.

To mark the 40th anniversary of President Richard Nixon's resignation, Arlington's Central Library will temporarily display historic newspapers, magazines, political campaign items and pop culture collectibles related to Nixon.

The items are from a private collection, and range in eras from Nixon's 1950s vice presidential campaign to a bound volume of official congressional tributes following his death in 1994.

The display also includes a piece of carpeting from the Democratic National Committee's offices at the Watergate, where a 1972 break-in sparked Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein's groundbreaking investigation into the Nixon administration.

Want to know more about the journalism that led to the demise of Nixon's presidency?

On Aug. 12, journalist Elizabeth Drew will visit Central Library to sign copies of her book "Washington Journal," which chronicles the reporting of Nixon's downfall.

Drew will also speak about what Watergate means in the 21st century and reflect on Nixon's ability to come back after his political disgrace.

The event is free, but seating is limited and on a fist-come, first-served basis.

According to a librarian, the exhibit will be open to the public for at least the next two weeks. Visit the library's website for more information on both events.
