New Year's Day

ZooLights Now Open at National Zoo

The National Zoo has kicked off its annual holiday tradition ZooLights. Last Friday, more than 500,000 environmentally friendly LED lights transformed the zoo into a winter wonderland after dark.

You can take pictures with the insanely popular Panda Claws, plunge down 150-foot-long snow-tubing tracks and warm your spirit with hot chocolate (spiked for the parents), eggnog, kettle corn, and more.

This year, you can also check out a new light show that's set to music.

ZooLights will run through New Year's Day. The light display will be closed on Christmas Eve, Christmas Day and New Year's Eve.

The event runs 5-9 p.m.; admission is free.

A special military night will be held Dec. 12. Guest who show a valid military ID will receive discounted parking and 10 percent off all gift shop items. Military families will also receive free hot chocolate, cookies and two free snow-tubing passes.
