Youth Program Supervisor Pleads Guilty to Sex Abuse

A D.C. youth supervisor pleaded guilty Wednesday to sexually accosting a 17-year-old girl, according to the U.S. Department of Justice.

Thomas Nelson, 54, supervised the female victim and other youths as part of the District’s Summer Youth Jobs Program, said the Justice Department.

According to the Justice Department, on June 29 Nelson made multiple lewd comments and sexual advances toward the victim, including touching the victim’s buttocks and thigh and exposing himself before later sending the victim a text message that stated, “This stays between you and me.”

Nelson pleaded guilty to a charge of attempted second-degree sexual abuse of a minor in a significant relationship, according to the Justice Department.  He faces up to three years and nine months in prison and up to a $37,500 fine.

The Justice Department said that under law, Nelson will be required to register as a sex offender for a 10-year period.
