A young Charles County volunteer firefighter and medic was killed in a nearly head-on crash late Tuesday night.
Autumn Marie Jenkins, 20, died in the crash on Maryland Route 425. Jenkins was a five-year firefighter/EMT with the Nanjemoy Volunteer Fire Department.
Authorities say that according to a preliminary investigation, Jenkins was driving south shortly after 9 p.m. as 23-year-old Darren Loyce Windsor drove a Chevrolet Silverado north. Authorities say Windor's Silverado didn't stay right of center and hit Jenkins' Kia Soul, which came to a rest in a field.
Jenkins, of Nanjemoy, Maryland, was pronounced dead at the scene.
Windor, of Indian Head, Maryland, was airlifted to Prince George's Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
Authorities said alcohol was a factor in the collision.
Troopers closed the northbound lanes of Route 425 for about four hours for accident reconstruction.
