Young Black Bear Spotted in Montgomery County

A young black bear is reportedly roaming around the Rockville Town Center, but police said there is no reason to believe it poses any threat.

Rockville police said they received two reports of a bear sighting in the 700 block of Owens Street and Woodley Gardens Park on Friday. They believe this is the same bear they’ve been tracking near Town Center and in the Montrose Parkway area since mid-June.

The bear appears to be a juvenile and weighs between 100 and 150 pounds. Authorities caution residents to not offer it food, or approach or antagonize the bear.

Police are monitoring the area where the sightings have occurred. If you spot the bear, call the Rockville Animal Control at 240-314-8900 so it can be tracked.

Black bear sighting are a rare occurrence in Montgomery County, according to the Montgomery County Parks website. Most are often young males, striking out on their own and finding their way to more desirable habitats in western Maryland, Pennsylvania, West Virginia, and Virginia.
