World War II Flyovers in D.C. to Mark VE Day Anniversary

Aviation enthusiasts are planning to mark the 70th anniversary of Victory in Europe Day by flying historic World War II aircraft over the nation's capital.

The World War II Victory Capitol Flyover will be held on May 8 over the National Mall. The plans were announced this week.

Organizers say dozens of vintage military aircraft from the World War II era will be flown in historically sequenced formations to represent the war's major battles. Some of the aircraft participating in the flyover include a B-29 Superfortress and a B-17 Flying Fortress. The plane that later dropped the atomic bomb was a B-29 Superfortress.

A collection of aircraft participating in the flyover will also be displayed at the National Air and Space Museum's Udvar-Hazy Center in Chantilly, Virginia, on May 9.
