ARLINGTON, Va. -- A construction worker died Tuesday afternoon when a trench collapsed on him, according to Arlington County Fire and Rescue.

The worker apparently went into cardiac arrest, emergency workers said.

The worker, identified as Pablo Gonzalez, 59, of Falls Church, had been alone in the trench in the 800 block of North Greenbriar Street, digging it for a water line at about 3 p.m. Tuesday when it collapsed. A second worker saw the collapsed trench and called 911.

"The person was completely buried underneath the dirt when our rescue crews got here," said Carol Saulnier, of Arlington County Fire and Rescue.
