More than 50 people are displaced from their homes after a fire ripped through a dozen apartments at a complex in Woodbridge, Va., Monday night.

Firefighters said they arrived to heavy smoke and fire coming from the third floor of the building in the 14400 block of Gemstone Drive about 9 p.m.

Some residents were jumping from their balconies to escape. Firefighters called a second alarm to help evacuate residents.

Firefighters controlled the fire within 10 minutes.

Some civilians suffered minor injuries. One firefighter also was treated for injuries.

Of the 56 displaced residents, 13 are children. The American Red Cross is assisting them with temporary housing.

The Prince William County Fire Marshal's Office is investigating what started the fire.
