Woman Struck by Bullet While Watching Soccer Game

Police say a 43-year-old Virginia woman was struck by a small-caliber round while watching her child's soccer game Sunday evening.

The woman, who lives in Gainesville, was sitting in a chair at George Hellwig Memorial Park in Manassas when she felt a sharp pain in her right thigh around 5:11 p.m. Believing she had been hit by a BB gun or some other projectile, she went to an area hospital for treatment.

Doctors determined that the woman had in fact been struck by a .22 round.

Investigators say no gunshot was heard at the game, and no one reported seeing anyone with a weapon.

The victim's injury is not life-threatening. The investigation into the shooting is ongoing.

"Really the way we're going to find out what happened is somebody in the public knows what happened and they really need to come forward," Grove Webster with the Northern Virginia Soccer Club said Monday.

Webster also mentioned soccer practice was canceled Monday but is expected to resume Tuesday.
