17-Year-Old Girl Shot While Driving Car in Northeast DC

A 17-year-old girl driving a car in the Brentwood neighborhood of Northeast D.C. is in critical condition after she was caught in gunfire and shot, police say.

The teen was driving on the 1400 block of Saratoga Avenue NE when someone opened fire, D.C. police said. She was shot in the head, law enforcement sources told News4. A man also was shot and wounded.

Law enforcement sources told News4 the girl was driving her nephew home.

D.C. police responded about 3:30 p.m. to the scene, which is about a half-mile northeast of the District's Home Depot store.

The teen girl and man, who was conscious, were both taken to a hospital.

The 17-year-old was not the intended target, police said.

"A seventeen year old is struggling for her life because someone thought it was OK to fire an illegal firearm in our community - senseless," D.C. Police Chief Peter Newsham said on Twitter.
