A woman was attacked on the Glover-Archbold Trail in Georgetown Tuesday night. News4's Chris Gordon has the latest. (Published Wednesday, Apr 2, 2014)

D.C. Police say a woman was sexually assaulted in the Glover-Archbold Park Tuesday.

The sex assault occurred around 8 p.m. in the area of Foxhall Road and Canal Road NW, nestled between wealthy -- and usually safe -- neighborhoods.

The woman was walking by herself when a man physically attacked and sexually assaulted her. He fled on foot.

"It's really scary," Penelope Woolley who lives just half a block from the crime scene said. "I may have to give up one of my favorite walks."

In 1998, Georgetown University graduate student Christine Mirzayan was dragged from Canal Road to the woods, raped, beaten and left to die. The case remains open.

Police believe the person who killed her has also been linked to several sexual assaults and rapes in Montgomery County but has never been found.

Joggers and walkers who use the trails told News4 they still feel safe in the daylight.
