Woman Knocked Into Chesapeake Bay Released from Hospital

A woman who swam to safety after her car was knocked off the Chesapeake Bay Bridge was released from the hospital on Saturday.

Maryland Transportation Authority police said Morgan Jade Lake, of Sunderland, Md., escaped from her Chrysler Sebring after it was struck by a tractor-trailer Friday evening and fell into the Chesapeake Bay. She was taken to the University of Maryland Shock Trauma Center where she was treated.

The driver of the tractor-trailer, Gabor Lovasz, from Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island, Canada, was not injured.

A third vehicle was also involved in the accident. Herbert and Lisa Sutcliffe, from Olney, Md., were uninjured.

Police said Lake’s car was struck by the tractor-trailer on the eastbound lanes of the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Friday evening. The car ended up in about 8 feet of water.

Engineers examined the bridge structure for potential damage, but allowed traffic to move freely shortly after the accident.

It was removed from the Chesapeake Bay on Saturday with a crane and barge. Police are asking anyone who witnessed the accident to contact them at 443-915-7797.
