Woman Dies After Falling From W Hotel

D.C. police are investigating a deadly fall from a posh hotel rooftop across from the White House.

Investigators said a woman was at the rooftop bar at the W Hotel at 515 15th St. NW when she somehow fell from the 10-story building at about 11 p.m. Wednesday.

Witnesses were quoted in the Washington Post as saying the woman had been drinking at the bar on the rooftop patio and climbed over a fence. Witnesses also were quoted by the Post as saying they saw her hanging by her hands from an overhang one story below the rooftop before falling.

Sources told NBC Washington's Pat Collins and the Post that the woman's death was a suicide.

Her name has not been released.

"The W Washington D.C. extends our sympathies to the family touched by this tragedy," read a statement from the hotel. " While the investigation is ongoing and we continue to cooperate with the Metropolitan Police Department, we can confirm that the victim was not a registered guest at the hotel, and it is not certain whether she spent any significant length of time at POV prior to her death."
