Woman, 80, Dies After Being Hit by Cyclist

Woman turned into the path of the rider and was struck head-on

A 80-year-old woman died Monday after being hit by a bicyclist on the Four Mile Run Bike Path.

Ita Lapina of Arlington, Va., sustained significant head trauma and died at Fairfax Hospital around 6:20 p.m., said Arlington County Police.

The accident happened around 7 a.m. in the 4900 block of Columbia Pike.

The bicyclist, a 62-year-old man, was riding downhill on the path when he saw Lapina ahead of him. He tried to warn her by ringing a bell and calling out, "to your left," a common warning among riders.

However, Lapina walked to her left instead, and turned around, according to both the cyclist and a witness. She was struck head-on and fell backwards to the ground, hitting her head.

The cyclist stayed on the scene and had a minor knee injury.
