A woman has died after she was attacked outside a convenience store in Alexandria, Virginia, and a man has been charged, police say.

Fedelia Montiel Benitiez, of Alexandria, died Thursday after she was assaulted 10 days earlier, on July 10, the Alexandria Police Department said Friday. She was 39.

Officers received a report about 11:45 p.m. July 10 that a woman was unconscious outside a convenience store on the 4900 block of Seminary Road, near I-395. A 7-Eleven is located on that block.

An investigation revealed that a man assaulted Benitiez as she left the store, police said.

Robert Coleman, 26, of Alexandria, was arrested the day after the assault and charged with malicious wounding. In the wake of Benitiez's death, he may face additional charges.

No information was released immediately on the motive for the crime, or whether Benitiez and Coleman are believed to have known each other.

Information on Coleman's lawyer was not available immediately. He's due in court Aug. 23, online court records say.

This is the third homicide in Alexandria this year.

Anyone with information on the crime is asked to call police at 703-746-6751.
