Week of Heat Takes Deadly Toll

At least 74 die in record temps

More than a week of brutal heat is finally coming to an end today. But the record-breaking temperatures took a deadly toll.

At least 74 deaths are attributed to the triple-digit temperatures across the country. Maryland says 13 died in the state during the heat wave and 10 deaths were reported in Virginia in that time.

The Midwest was hardest hit by the heat with temperatures topping out at 105 degrees or more, and that led to 18 deaths in Illinois.

Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Ohio, Tennessee, Alabama, South Carolina, Missouri, Wisconsin, Pennsylvania and Mississippi also reported deaths believed to be caused by the heat.
