Wax On, Wax Off

Thomas Jefferson statue gets makeover

Thomas Jefferson got a wax job.

The bronze statue of Jefferson that sits on the campus of the University of Virginia is being cleaned and repaired, according to the Associated Press.

Conservationists washed the statue down with a mild soap, then covered it with hot wax to fend off corrosion and make Jefferson shine.

The figure’s marble base will also get a makeover. Two swords, a crown and the scales of justice that disappeared from the base over the years will be recast.

The statue was installed in 1918 and sits on the north side of the school’s rotunda, paying homage to the former U.S. president and UVA founder. It’s one of several bronze figures being restored.
