Since our story aired, we received the following response from Sears: "Sears considers customer safety a top priority in delivering quality products and services to consumers. We are confident that our process for installing hot water heaters is compliant with applicable regulation and industry standards. We support the Office of Consumer Protection developing enhanced procedures to help ensure consumers schedule a water heater inspection. Our third party installer is working with the Maryland Office of Consumer Protection by taking additional efforts to encourage consumers to close out any open inspections by calling and writing to the customers who have not scheduled a final inspection, urging them to do so. Sears is unable to comment on any customer situation without additional facts, and we would like the opportunity to look into any such complaint and respond."
