Water Main Break Closes Alexandria Elementary School

An Alexandria elementary school will be closed Tuesday after a nearby water main broke.

Douglas MacArthur Elementary School announced that it would be closed just after 5 a.m. It's one of 100 customers without water because of the break.

Water burst from the 8-inch water main Monday, washing out the ground underneath the pavement. Sam Data lives in front of the scene of the broken main and told News4's Kristin Wright that he was told not to move his car from the driveway.

"In case we need to buy something, in case we need to go somewhere, we can not do that anymore," Data said.

Data's next door neighbor had to park down the street and walk home with his 3-month-old child.

"We've got two small kids, so it's significant not to have water," Jason Gue said. "We'll just pick some up at the store and make do with what we've got."

Officials say the cold weather and sudden thaw caused the water main issue.

Janneys Lane is closed between W. Taylor Run Parkway and Skyhill Road as crews work to repair the main. There's no word on how long those repairs will take to complete.
