Some residents of Laurel and Beltsville could be experiencing low water pressure and discolored water this weekend after a water main break.
The Washington Suburban Sanitary Commission (WSSC) said Sunday that the 42-inch break happened at around 4:30 p.m. Saturday when a contractor working on a project for the Maryland State Highway Administration (SHA) struck the main at the intersection of Van Dusen and Virginia Manor roads, east of Interstate 95.
WSSC says that discolored water is safe to drink, though the taste may differ from usual. Discolored water can also be used for showing, flushing toilets, and cleaning floors. However, it is not recommended for washing clothes or preparing baby formula.
By Sunday evening, crews were repairing the break, and the area's water pressure was close to normal. The area of the intersection is described as an industrial area with lots of construction and no buildings nearby. Roads are still closed in the area of the break and WSSC says that some residents will have discolored water through at least Monday.
