Not every Michael & Son Cares project is a huge undertaking, and not all the recipients have a heart wrenching story. Elderly couple Kenneth and Shirley Vailes are long-time D.C. residents facing the same financial issues as millions of other elderly Americans. It's nothing new to hear about social security recipients who have to make tough choices between things like medicine and the mortgage. For the Vailes it was choosing between paying their bills and living with a constant risk of carbon monoxide poisoning from a faulty water heater. The Vailes had worked hard their whole life and never asked for help. However, after seeing an episode of "Helping Hands" on NBC4, Kenneth decided to send a letter asking for assistance.
"I sent a letter to the Cares Program and before I knew, I had a bunch of really nice guys doing work at my house. I couldn't believe it" said Kenneth.
The Michael & Son Cares Program provided the Vailes with a new water heater, kitchen faucet and various electrical repairs. "They had originally called us about a water heater but our technicians noticed some other issues" said Basim Mansour, Proud Son and Owner of Michael & Son Services. "I also noticed their refrigerator was broken so we surprised them with a brand new one" continued Mansour. The Cares Program left the Vailes with a few less problems to worry about and a number they can call whenever they need help.
