The Washington Monument is closed until further notice after the elevator stopped with 19 people inside, officials said.
The elevator stopped Tuesday afternoon, a National Park Service (NPS) spokesman said. The visitors exited the evevator and made their way down about 280 feet using the stairs, at least 20 stories.
An additional 23 people were on the monument's observation deck when the elevator stopped, the NPS spokesman said.
Everyone made it out of the monument safely.
Information on the cause of the malfunction -- the latest in a series -- was not immediately available. Elevator engineers were on the scene.
The monument has been closed at least eight times since May 2015 because of elevator problems. During one elevator outage in May, more than 40 people, including two pregnant women, were trapped at the top.
