Washington Monument Closed Due to Elevator Problem

The Washington Monument will not be open Saturday after crews discovered a problem with the elevator prior to opening.

A statement from the National Park Service said a faulty bearing caused an interruption of service during test runs. No visitors were in the monument at the time, and no staff was affected.

The park service said the monument will remain closed for the remainder of Saturday. A spokeman for the agency said depending on the availablity of parts to affect repairs, the monument will be closed until at least July 26.

The Washington Monument was closed for a few days in May due to elevator supply problems. Prior to that, the elevator broke down twice in one week in April.
