Off-Duty Warrenton Officer Who Slugged Woman, Breaking Her Nose, Faces Charges

Prosecutors say a group of off-duty officers had been "drinking heavily" and one of them struck a woman at a bar

An off-duty officer who allegedly punched a woman in the face at a Virginia bar, breaking her nose, faces assault and battery charges and will resign, prosecutors said Thursday.

The Fauquier County office of the Commonwealth’s Attorney said it will bring charges against Warrenton police officer Carl M. Ferguson for the October incident. Ferguson and the 21-year-old woman were at a bar called Fat Tuesday's when he allegedly punched her.

Commonwealth’s Attorney James Fisher said Ferguson and four other off-duty officers had been "drinking heavily" during a retirement celebration.

Ferguson plans to resign from the Warrenton Police Department on Dec. 31, prosecutors said.

The woman seeks compensation for medical bills and her broken cellphone, which was damaged during the incident.
