Va. Volunteers Turn a Day Off Into a Day On

Several groups to benefit from service projects

The Martin Luther King Jr. holiday brought a day off work and school for many in the area.

But some turned it into a day "on" by volunteering their time and talents.

In McLean, Virginia, dozens of people gathered at the Redeemer Lutheran Church to help non-profits.

The activities were designed to accommodate families and children of all ages.

Some made seed balls for the 4H; others made arts and crafts bags to distribute to kids at area hospitals and shelters; and still others made emergency preparation bags for themselves and others in the community.

This is the sixth year Volunteer Fairfax has organized Day of Service projects.

The group has been working in Northern Virginia for 40 years.
