Volunteer Firefighter Dies in Maryland Blaze

Gene Kirchner, 25, injured while responding to fire in a Victorian-style home April 24; died Thursday

A funeral has been set for a volunteer firefighter who died after being injured in a fire at a Reisterstown home last week.

Twenty-five-year-old Gene Kirchner of the Reisterstown Volunteer Fire Co. died Thursday at Shock Trauma in Baltimore.

Officials say a funeral will be held Sunday at Har Sinai Congregation in Owings Mills. Kirchner will be buried at Dulaney Valley Memorial Gardens in Timonium.

Kirchner was injured while responding to an April 24 fire in a Victorian-style home. He was carried unconscious from the home.

A resident of the home, 58-year-old Steven Stark, died shortly after being pulled from the blaze.

Baltimore County officials say that there was no sign of foul play in the fire, but the cause remains under investigation.

Gov. Martin O'Malley ordered the Maryland State Flag be flown at half-staff.
