Virginia State Workers Get Extra Long Weekend

But not by choice

The time off may be nice, but not the lack of salary that goes along with it.

Thousands of Virginia state workers will get an extra day off this Memorial Day weekend as a furlough day. Former Gov. Tim Kaine ordered the cost-cutting measure last year.  It’s saving about $17 million for the commonwealth.

Virginia’s payroll covers just over 100,000 employees.  The furlough means all Virginia DMV customer service centers will be closed Friday, Saturday, Sunday and Monday.  Good luck with the lines when they re-open on Tuesday!

But not everyone will be off Friday. Critical personnel such as police and emergency crews will still be on the clock.

Other states like Maryland, Kentucky and North Carolina have also required employees to take furloughs.
