Virginia Woman Charged With Attempted Murder of Daughter

Authorities: Julia Franzke Vazquez, 26, planned to kill herself and her daughter in a house fire

A Virginia woman has been charged with the attempted murder of her three-year-old daughter.

Authorities say that Julia Franzke Vazquez, 26, planned to kill herself and her daughter in a house fire.

Around 2 p.m. Wednesday, Vazquez gave the girl cough medicine to make her fall asleep and lit a fire in a bathroom of their home in the 19000 block of Fuller Heights Road, authorities say.

When the fire became too intense, Vazquez apparently lost her nerve and put it out, authorities say. She then took her daughter to Fairfax and left her in the care of a relative before hitting a tree with her car.

Vazquez was transported to a hospital for treatment. The relative brought the little girl to a hospital to be evaluated for minor burns. She was treated and released.

Vazquez remains in the hospital for further treatment and evaluation. She has been charged with attempted first degree murder and arson to an occupied dwelling.
