Mother Sentenced After Infant Son ODs on Heroin

Fairfax County woman left her child with baby-sitters.

A Fairfax County jury has convicted a Springfield mother of child neglect in the heroin overdose of her 5-month-old baby.

Marilyn R. Fischl, 36, was sentenced to 30 days in jail. Because of overcrowding, she could only spend half that time behind bars. The judge may impose or reduce the jury's sentence at a hearing scheduled for May 9.

Prosecutors accused Fischel of supplying heroin to two roommates who were babysitting her children last summer. She denied it.

The baby-sitters snorted lines of heroin, according to court testimony, and the baby got a hold of the paper used to wrap the heroin.

The infant’s grandmother took him to the emergency room after she noticed he was “quivering, and his eyes were rolling in the back of his head."

Doctors said he suffered a heroin overdose. He has since recovered.
