A Newport News woman accused of leaving her infant son alone in a car has been charged with child neglect.

Police tell media outlets that officers found the 1-year-old boy asleep in a car seat inside the vehicle. A witness had reported seeing the infant in the vehicle, which was parked outside a Kohl's store.

Police arrested the mother, 29-year-old Ralitsa D. Saunders, when she exited the store and approached the officers.

Police say the infant wasn't injured. The father took custody of the infant after police called him to the scene.

The incident occurred Friday.
