State wildlife officials are investigating a fatal hunting accident in Carroll County, Va.

A minor mistook 50-year-old Sanford Ray Semones of Fancy Gap for a deer and shot him with a .50-caliber muzzleloader, according to the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries.

The department tells media outlets that Semones and the minor were hunting on private property when the shooting occurred Tuesday evening.

    No criminal charges are planned.
