Virginia Legislation Would Move New Power Lines for Amazon Data Center Underground

A coalition of lawmakers, including the chairman of the Virginia General Assembly Commerce and Labor committee, said they will propose legislation that would help take the planned Dominion Power lines for the future Amazon data center underground.

The legislation would give the commonwealth’s corporation commission the ability to consider impact on home values and historic areas in deciding on best routes and whether lines should be buried. The power lines for the data center would be using 120-foot transmission towers that originally threatened the historic Carver Road area and were moved to along Virginia Route 66.

Under that configuration, the lines would be right next to hundreds of homes in western Prince William County, Virginia. The new legislation, if passed, would give more weight to the concerns of property owners when power line routes are evaluated.

Dominion Energy issued a statement that said, “The existing and growing energy demands of the greater Haymarket-area has created a well-documented need to build new infrastructure that will benefit all customers. The case is currently pending further review by the Virginia State Corporation Commission under the current tenets of Virginia law. We appreciate our public officials’ recognition of and support for a robust, safe and modern grid.”
