Stafford County Doctor Facing 95 Charges Over Prescription Drugs

Charges involve the illegal distribution of prescription drugs, one of which led to a fatal overdose, authorities say

A Stafford County doctor is facing 95 indictments over charges involving the illegal distribution of prescription drugs -- one of which led to a fatal overdose, authorities say.

Nibedita Mohanty, 54, is charged with 72 counts of felony distribution of a Schedule II narcotic, 22 counts of felony obtaining money by false pretenses (involving insurance fraud), and one count of involuntary manslaughter.

The manslaughter charge stems from the overdose death of a patient due to an over-prescription of pain narcotics, said the Stafford County Sheriff's Office.

Mohanty was indicted Monday and arrested Friday. She is being held in a regional jail.

Mohanty's patients either personally abused the prescriptions or or resold them, said the Stafford County Sheriff's Office.

Authorities began an investigation when "it became apparent that substantial quantities of prescription pain narcotics were being dispensed by Mohanty without appropriate medical oversight," they said.

This investigation is ongoing.
