Virginia DMV Will Accept Debit Cards

The near-infinite wait in line at the Department of Motor Vehicles might get just a little bit better soon, at least if you're in Virginia.

Soon residents will be able to use their debit cards at most of the state's Department of Motor Vehicles offices -- because really, who's still carrying around checks?

The agency announced it will begin accepting debit cards at 53 of its 74 offices across the state. The first locations, in Staunton and Bristol, should be upgraded by mid-January.

Before, Virginians could use cash, checks or credit cards at the DMV. Commissioner Richard Holcomb said adding debit cards as a payment option will speed up transactions and streamline operations.
