Virginia Beach Man Fatally Shot While Hunting

Kevin Brooks, 46, died after he and a companion split up while stalking wild turkeys

A Virginia Beach man was shot to death Wednesday while turkey hunting near Waverly.

Kevin Brooks, 46, died while hunting with 70-year-old Raymond Weidner of Virginia Beach.

Authorities say that after the two men split up, Weidner saw movement and misidentified his target, fatally shooting Brooks, reported the Virginian-Pilot. Brooks was pronounced dead at the scene.

An investigation is on-going.

Brooks ran a hunt club on the Eastern Shore, according to a friend, Patrick Hayes.

"I'm not sure if he was married before, but he has two boys who hunt with him a lot," Hayes told the Virginian-Pilot. "He was a very good hunter... You hear about this kind of thing happening every now and then. You just never think it's going to be anybody you know."

Brooks' death is the second hunting fatality this year in Virginia. The first occurred on New Year's Day in Carroll County, when a man was shot accidentally by his young son.
