Va. Lottery Reaps $16M From Jackpot Sales

The run up to the $636 million Mega Millions jackpot has been profitable for the Virginia Lottery.

The lottery said Wednesday that it received more than $16 million in profit from jackpot ticket sales. Under state law, all lottery profit goes to Virginia's K-12 public schools.

The Mega Millions jackpot was the second-largest lottery prize in U.S. history. Two winning tickets were sold in California and Georgia for Tuesday's drawing.

The lottery says more than 789,000 tickets sold in Virginia for Wednesday's drawing won other prizes, including one ticket sold in Newport News that won $20,000.
