RICHMOND, Va. -- Virginia is partnering with its largest electric utility to provide hybrid vehicle charging stations at a limited number of rest areas, the Richmond Times-Dispatch reported.

The first charging station was installed this month at the westbound New Kent Safety Rest Area on Interstate 64. It can charge up to four vehicles at a time.

The stations will charge vehicles at 120 volts but ultimately will be upgraded to 240 volts. Dominion Virginia Power will work with the Virginia Department of Transportation to identify other locations for the charging stations.

The partnership with Dominion Virginia comes at no expense to the state, Gov. Tim Kaine's office  said Tuesday.
