Sextuplets Thriving After Delivery at Virginia Hospital

Ajibola and Adeboye Taiwo had been trying to have children for 17 years

A couple who had been trying to conceive for nearly 20 years are now parents to sextuplets.

Ajibola Taiwo gave birth to three boys and three girls on May 11 at VCU Medical Center in Richmond, Virginia, the hospital said in a statement. The babies are the first sextuplets delivered at the hospital.

All six babies are doing well at the Children's Hospital of Richmond, but they are tiny. Taiwo was 30 weeks pregnant when she gave birth via cesarean section. The babies ranged in weight from 1 pound, 10 ounces, to 2 pounds, 15 ounces.

"I hope for the smallest of my six children to grow up and say 'I was so small, and look at me now,'" Taiwo said.

Ajibola and Adeboye Taiwo had been trying to have children for 17 years. The couple was overjoyed when they saw four heartbeats at their first ultrasound in November, the hospital said in a statement.

They didn't know they were having sextuplets until two months later.

"I was excited," Adeboye Taiwo said. "For the very first time we were expecting."

Sextuplets are quite rare. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, of the nearly 4 million live births in the U.S. in 2015, only 24 were quintuplets or other higher-order births.
