Annandale Utility Pole Falls Into Street

Around 1,700 Dominion Power customers lost power

A utility pole in Annandale, Va. fell into the street Tuesday night causing a transformer to blow, resulting in loss of power to around 1,700 Dominion Power customers.

The downed lines have forced the closure of Braddock Road just inside the Beltway, between Ravensworth Road and Ferndale Street. Utility crews have been working through the night to remove the downed pole, but the job is taking longer than expected.

Motorists are advised to avoid the area. Police say it could be 9 a.m. or later before the road is reopened.

The wires supporting the utility pole were rusted, causing the pole to fall into the street around 6:30 p.m., according to a spokesperson with Dominion Power.  Fairfax County Police said no one was injured by the falling pole.
